Dealing with Anxiety
You start feeling tense and restless when hearing news about COVID-19. You cannot help but have a sense of impending doom. If you think that only adults get anxious, you are wrong. Children can be affected by stress and anxiety in COVID-19 outbreak as well. Ten years from now, children will probably forget about the recent happenings, but they will always remember how their parents reacted.
How do we deal with anxiety in COVID-19 outbreak?
1. Keep things in perspective
Yes, COVID-19 is highly contagious however most people will only experience mild symptoms. All over the world, healthcare workers and scientists are rushing to come up with medications and vaccines to overcome this pandemic. Just be patient.
2. Get your facts right
Verify any new information that you receive from family, friends and social media. The U.S Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia website provide useful and reputable information.
3. Communicate with your children
Explain to your children why they need to remain at home during this period and how to protect themselves. Keep them focused on their routines and schedules. Also, limit their time spent on social media to keep their anxiety in check.
4. Practice self-care activities
Having a good sleep, eating healthily and exercising is vital to promote ‘healthy thinking’.
5. Practice relaxation techniques
Deep breathing exercises, yoga or meditation can take the edge off anxiety.
6. Seek help when it is needed
